Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers
By Anne Lamott
The word 'prayers' in the title automatically makes people think that is another spiritual book. However, this is not the case at all.
Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers is more targeted to those who are not already praying than those who already engage in prayer. Especially since Anne manages to write about prayer, in a very unique way which is easily understood by every person regardless of whether they actively pray or not. Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers is a very small book whose focus is on how to get through life every single day. It took me about an hour to read through it. This was one of the issues, I personally had being a fan of the author. When I read her books it is almost like I am going for a spiritual therapy lesson. I enjoyed how she took the time to look at how faith is needed now, more than before. If you are one of those people who believes that they can never incorporate prayer, in their lives, you may change your mind after you read this book.
Who is Anne Lamott? She is an accomplished New York Times best selling author with more than four books that have been featured on the best sellers list. These include Plan B, Some Assembly Required, Traveling Mercies, Grace (Eventually as well as novels like Rosie and Imperfect Birds. She has already received the Guggenheim Fellowship and has also been inducted into the California Hall of Fame. She is based in the northern part of the state of California on the west coast of the United States of America. I really enjoy how she writes very raw books, which are not only rich but very funny at the same time. You will not be able to help, but laugh a couple of times as she is not afraid to share her own daily praying habits. Within all that humour, it is amazing how she is able to maintain such honesty in her writing. Not only is it honest, but it engages you and forces you to think about what you are reading.
This book will help anyone simplify their prayer and spiritual life. She emphasizes that prayer is not about praying to God, but about praying to a greater force, that you do not understand. This book on prayer will uplight you and also give you hope. She writes it very similar to how to books, but adds an inspirational edge to it. The addition of her personal stories enhance your experience as you read from chapter to chapter. She includes her rolodex, and this alone is worth many times the price of the book. One change you may notice in your life after you have gone through it, is that you will alter the way you pray, based on the new knowledge you will have acquired. I now find that these days, I tend to pray more often than I used to before. It maybe a good idea to get your copy in hardback, because most people tend to keep reading this book over and over again. One lady told me she now uses it a devotional, every single morning.
